How secure is my data if I store it online?

The topic of our Blog today is data security for files that are stored online with  a data backup service.

First, let us say that we can only talk about the security features Filetwin offers our clients. Hopefully, other backup services use similar security features because if they didn’t, you’d have to wonder about how serious they really are about safeguarding your digital assets.

When talking about security and files stored “in the cloud” (a snazzy way of saying the Internet), there are a few main considerations:

1. Encryption – We could ramble on about encryption but there’s so much published online that we think if you’re not familiar with data encryption, perhaps we should let the experts bring you up to speed. Keep in mind that you’ll be redirected to a Cryptography link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Data_encryption. The roots of “masking information” goes back thousands of years, but in today’s world encrypting data has become serious business – especially since so many financial transactions are done through the Internet. At Filetwin, we offer 256-bit AES encryption which is computationally infeasible to crack.

2. Transmission Safety - Considering that data must travel through the Internet before it gets to its final storage location - in this case, your data resides in our Filetwin managed data center - all communications between Filetwin and your server or PC are transported in a 256-bit Secure Socket Layer (SSL) channel. To learn more about SSL certificates, GoDaddy offers a decent overview here http://www.godaddy.com/ssl/ssl-certificates.aspx

Since we know all this technology stuff can be overwhelming or perhaps you don’t care to learn the “nitty-gritty” of the security aspects – no problem, we’ve develop an illustration to make is easy to understand.

Backing up and shielding data should be something that each business or individual attempts to do. Data is vital, especially for enterprises or individuals who make money in an internet home business opportunity. If you haven’t looked into backing up your files or haven’t backed them up before, you should truly look into it before it is too late.

Among the various ways to back up your files are online info backups. Online backups are very good for companies, as they’ll protect your data. You can think of this technique as being a server and a host, as the company stores your information over the Net. You can log in at anytime, and access your information. If your drive crashes, you can simply access the data you want while not having to wait until your data is recovered by a specialist.

Although online info backups are very good, they do have some concerns with security. Though the server is indeed encrypted, it isn’t absolutely safe. Hackers can get into the system if they’re ok, even though it is extremely rare. Online back up firms make their living shielding data, which is why they’re so very popular. They know what they are doing, and they can keep your information safe.

The neatest thing about online information backups is the fact that the data isn’t stored at your office. It does not need the amount of space that CD or DVD media back up uses, nor have you got to protect it from workers who are not authorized to access it. The company that you select does all the work for you, and they protect the info from meddling eyes. You upload the info to their servers, then you and whomever you give the login data to are the sole ones who can access it.

Before you make a final call on whom to use for your online info backup services, you should choose one that is completely secure, has great lockout policies, and human security around their facility too. The better firms will be offering state of the art security, with no fear of anything coming in touch with your information. Even though they can tend be costly, the last thing you want is to pay money for a service that doesn’t entirely protect your info.

If you do your research and consider what each company has to offer you, you can plan accordingly . You should usually look into the previous record and past history of the company also to discover just how well they protect information. Your data and information is your life, so you”ll obviously wish to choose and online back up company who takes a lot of pride in their performance – and will protect your information no matter what.
